The refugee crisis has been prominent in the news for over a month, and how has Canada responded? In short, the response is shameful.
A niqab ban?
The passing of the Zero Tolerance for Barbaric Practices Act?
A "Report Your Neighbour" hotline for "reporting barbaric cultural practices"?
We say NO to all of this!
NO to Islamophobia
NO to racist policies
NO to gaining votes with policies rooted in hatred!
We know we are not alone in Victoria, traditional Lekwungen territory, when we say Not in Our Names! We will be holding a rally on Saturday October 17th to say NO to hate and fear! It is time for us to put an end to racism that plagues our government, and to speak out against the rampant Islamophobia that has underlined the past two weeks of media. It is time for Canada to respond to the refugee crisis by opening its borders, rather than to respond by passing racist and targeting policies.
We will be meeting at 11:30 and will have sign-making materials. Of course, we encourage those who have the capacity to do so, to bring signs and banners of their own. The rally will begin at 12:00 pm.
