As part of the #RefugeesWelcome Cross-Country 10 Days of Action, Sanctuary Hamilton is hosting a Rally and March to Welcome Refugees and say that Islamaphobia has no place in our community. Starting at 7:00pm Oct 9th, in Gore Park.
In recent weeks people have organized actions and events across the country to focus attention on the global refugee crisis. Canada is complicit in creating refugees through bombing campaigns in Syria and elsewhere, displacement through corporate mining practices, and the lack of concern to Missing and Murdered aboriginal women. We need to come together to demand the Canadian government stop displacement and commit to bringing in more refugees.
In addition to egregious inaction in the face of this current crisis, we have also seen the Harper government actively promoting hatred and bigotry towards the Islamic faith in an attempt to win cheap votes. Once again, the fear-mongering linking all Muslims and people from the Middle East and Africa to terrorism is being used as a cover for inaction by claiming that refugees pose a 'security threat'. Leaving hatred and bigotry unchallenged makes people less safe, and makes it easier for governments and corporations to avoid responsibility for this crisis. Let's stand up and say we are not falling for your cheap lies and stereotypes and that Refugees are Welcome here!
